Data Notes:

▪ During the seven years from 2011 to 2017, 29 states and NYC reported vaccination coverage for Tdap (tetanus toxoid, reduced diphtheria toxoid, and acellular pertussis vaccine) via the PRAMS survey. Participating states varied by year with three states (DE, MI, OK) participating during all seven years. States with response rates ≤ 65% in 2011, ≤ 60% from 2012-2014, and ≤ 55% from 2015 onward were excluded from analysis for that year.

▪ Data from NYC are included in NY.

▪ In 2011, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommended Tdap vaccination for pregnant women who previously had not received Tdap to reduce the incidence of pertussis-related deaths of infants, as they bear the highest burden of pertussis-related deaths and hospitalizations, and are too young to be vaccinated. The current ACIP recommendation, since 2012, is for pregnant women to receive a dose of Tdap vaccine during each pregnancy (preferably during 27-36 weeks of gestation), regardless of any previous Tdap vaccination.

▪ Tdap vaccination was defined as Tdap vaccination received during the most recent pregnancy for the year respondents were surveyed. Respondents who did not receive Tdap vaccination, or who received Tdap vaccination before or after this current pregnancy for the year they were surveyed, were recorded as not receiving Tdap vaccination.

▪ Since there were no major changes to the vaccination questions on the PRAMS questionnaire from 2011 through 2017, the Tdap vaccination information collected were considered to be comparable across these years.

▪ Data on Tdap vaccination were obtained from optional standard survey questions from 2011-2017, but not all participating states asked these questions. This is most notable in 2011 and 2012 which had low response rates. As a result, only the overall coverage is reported for these two years. Estimates from 2013 to 2017 include overall coverage as well as coverage by race/Hispanic ethnicity and age groups.

▪ In 2016 and 2017, VT released race/ethnicity data for non-Hispanic whites (NH Whites) but not for the other racial/ethnic groups as other states reported; consequently, that is the only racial/ethnic group reported from VT for those years.

▪ Coverage estimates for each survey year are among women aged 18 years and older who had a recent live birth and reported being vaccinated during that pregnancy.

▪ % = weighted percentage of population vaccinated. Percentages are weighted to adjust for complex survey design and nonresponse.

▪ CI = 95% confidence interval half-width.

▪ Diff = the difference between the state estimate and the median estimate.

* Estimates not reliable because sample size is <30.

† Estimates not reliable because relative standard error is >0.3.

‡ Estimates might not be reliable because confidence interval half-width is >10.
