• Vaccine Abbreviations: Td = tetanus-diphtheria toxoids; Tdap = tetanus toxoid, reduced diphtheria toxoid, and acellular pertussis; MenACWY = meningococcal conjugate; HPV = human papillomavirus; MMR = measles, mumps, and rubella; HepB = hepatitis B. • Technical Abbreviations: CI = 95% confidence interval; NA = not available (estimate not reported because data not collected or unweighted sample size for the denominator was <30 or (95%CI half width / estimate) > 0.588); MSA=Metropolitan Statistical Area. • Estimates with confidence intervals >20 may not be reliable. • Technical Notes • Vaccination coverage estimates include only adolescents who had adequately provider-reported immunization records. The definition of adequate provider data changed in 2014. Beginning in 2014, vaccination coverage estimates are not directly comparable to those for 2013 and previous years. Please see the revised definition of Adequate Provider Data (APD) for more information. • The range of birth dates of adolescents included in the NIS-Teen varied by survey period. • Poverty status for each survey year was based on the U.S. Census poverty thresholds for the year immediately before the survey. • Race/ethnicity was reported by parent/guardian respondent. Adolescents of Hispanic ethnicity may be of any race. Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islanders and persons of multiple races were not included because of small sample sizes. • Sociodemographic characteristics have been associated with under vaccination among children. • Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) was constructed based on parent/guardian respondent-reported city, state, county, and zip code of residence using the February 2013 MSA definitions file. MSA designation not applicable in Guam and U.S. Virgin Islands. • Provider visit was based on provider report of adolescents with an 11-12 year old provider visit. • Insurance coverage categories were determined by parent/guardian report and are mutually exclusive. “Private insurance, only” - insurance coverage by private insurance, insurance obtained through an employer or union, or insurance directly purchased from an insurance company. Does not include adolescents covered by private insurance in addition to any other type of insurance. “Medicaid, CHIP, or Other Public Insurance” - public insurance coverage through Medicaid, CHIP, or other public insurance, including Medicare, Medigap, military insurance, or the Indian Health Service. “Uninsured” - no reported insurance coverage. Adolescents with other types of insurance were excluded. • History of varicella disease was obtained by parent/guardian report or provider records. • Starting in 2016, HPV vaccination was reported for males and females combined and separately. An up-to-date HPV vaccination measure was added to assess completion of the HPV vaccine series (2-doses separated by 5 months (minus 4 days) for immunocompetent adolescents initiating the HPV vaccine series before their 15th birthday and 3 doses for all others). • Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices (ACIP) vaccine recommendations and guidelines. • NIS-Teen moved from a dual landline and cell phone sampling frame to a single cell phone sampling frame in 2018. |
